Vendor: Fantasy Flight Games
Type: Board Games

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

The Rebel Alliance fights valiantly against the tyranny of the Galactic Empire. Each new victory brings the Rebels hope, and each heroic sacrifice strengthens their resolve. Still, the Empire’s resources are vast, and the firepower of its Empire Navy is unmatched. With neither side willing to accept defeat, their war rages across the galaxy…

This new head-to-head game for two players brings the galaxy-spanning war between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance to your tabletop. In this easy-to-learn game, you and your opponent each choose a side, playing as either the Empire or the Rebels, and as the game progresses you both strengthen the power of your starting decks and work to destroy each other’s bases. The first player to destroy three of their opponent’s bases wins the game!

A Duel Between Decks

At the beginning of the game, both players start with a ten-card starter deck themed after their faction (Empire or Rebels). These starter decks don’t have a lot of firepower, with seven of the ten cards being unable to do anything but generate resources. The goal of the game is to destroy three of your opponent’s bases before they do the same to you, so you’re going to need a bit more power. Thankfully, that’s where those resources come in.

In the center of the table are the galaxy deck and the galaxy row. The galaxy deck is made up of Empire cards, Rebel cards, and neutral cards, and there are always six cards laid out face-up next to the deck to form the galaxy row. Empire cards in the galaxy row are turned to face the Empire player while the Rebel cards are turned to face the Rebel player (neutral cards are turned sideways so both players can read them easily). During your turn, you can use the resources you generate to purchase cards belonging to your faction or neutral cards.

In this example, the Rebel player spends 6 resources from their resource pool to purchase Princess Leia from the galaxy row.

When you purchase a card, it goes into your discard pile, which means you won’t actually be able to use the new card until your deck reshuffles. That said, as you continue to purchase more and more cards, your deck will grow stronger and stronger.

Stay on Target

Once you have acquired some cards with decent attack power, it’s time to go on the offensive. You can use your cards to attack your opponent’s base (which you will need to do to win the game), but you can also use them to attack cards of your opponent’s faction in the galaxy row. This is called either “bounty hunting” or “sabotage,” depending on your faction.

In this example, the Rebel player is using their Mon Calamari Cruiser to attack the Empire base and using their Rebel Commando to sabotage the Scout Trooper in the galaxy row. Both of these Rebel cards have an attack power of 3.

Each Rebel and Empire unit card in the galaxy row has a “target value” and a reward, which are displayed upside-down so that the opposing faction can read them. If you commit an amount of attack power to an opposing unit equal to or greater than its target value, then that card is discarded from the galaxy row and you get to claim the reward!

Director Krennic has a target value of 5. If the Rebel player manages to sabotage him, they claim his reward of 3 resources and 2 Force (we’ll explain the Force mechanic later in this article).

In addition to units, players can also find capital ships in the galaxy row, such as the Rebel Transport or the Imperial Carrier . These are special cards for a couple of reasons; first, unlike unit cards, capital ships stay in play and are not discarded at the end of the round. Second, before your opponent can deal damage to your base, they must destroy each capital ship you have in play. With abilities that help you on your turn and some protection for your base on your opponent’s turn, capital ships are always worth the investment!

Of course, the bases themselves are also a factor in your strategy. The Rebels always start with Dantooine and the Empire with Lothal , neither of which has any inherent abilities; however, once your base is destroyed, you can choose a replacement from your base deck. Each base (other than the starting bases) has its own special ability, which means you’ll need to choose your second and third bases carefully in order to maximize their potential. Just remember that if your third base is destroyed, you lose the game!

Use the Force

The balance of the Force can tip the scales between the Empire and the Rebels. In Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game, this is represented by a Balance of the Force track.

In this example, the Force is currently with the Rebel player because it is on one of the three light side spaces.

Several cards have abilities that say: “If the Force is with you…” These abilities can only be used when the Force marker is on your side of the Balance of the Force track. Each time you gain Force, the force marker is moved toward your side of the track by the indicated amount. If the Force is all the way to your side at the start of your turn, you gain one additional resource to use for that turn, which means it’s always worthwhile to tip the balance in your favor.

The Force begins the game all the way on the Rebels’ side, but the Empire gets to take the first turn. Regardless of which faction you play as, what you choose to do in those opening moves can have a lasting impact on the rest of the game.

A Galactic Struggle

Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game is fast-paced, easy-to-learn, and fun for everyone. Can you emerge victorious from this galactic conflict? Find out when Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game arrives in March of 2023!

Vendor: Pegasus Spiele
Type: Board Games
Price: 34.95

Beer & Bread is a multi-use card game for two players. Its clever structure of alternating rounds puts a fascinating twist on player interaction, card drafting, and resource management.

Founded on the fruitful lands of an erstwhile monastery, two villages have held up the dual tradition of brewing beer and baking bread. While sharing fields and resources, they still find pride in their friendly rivalry of besting each other’s produce.

Each of you represents one of these villages. Over the course of six years - which alternate between fruitful and dry - you must harmonize your duties of harvesting and storing resources, producing beer and bread, selling them for coins and upgrading your facilities.

However, in order to win, you must maintain the balance between your baked and liquid goods. Because, after the sixth year, you only score the coins collected from the type of good - beer or bread - for which you earned less. The village with the higher score wins.

Vendor: Pandasaurus Games
Type: Board Games
Price: 48.95

The Wolves is a pack-building strategy game for 2-5 players. It’s survival of the fittest as you compete to build the largest, most dominant pack by claiming territory, recruiting lone wolves, and hunting prey. But be careful not to expand too recklessly into terrain where your rivals thrive – they may lure members of your pack away.

A clever action-selection mechanism drives your choices. Each action requires you to flip terrain tiles matching the terrain where you wish to take your action. These double-sided tiles mean the actions you take this round will set up which terrain types you can act on in the next round. As you take actions to expand your pack’s control of each region, you will also upgrade your pack’s attributes, allowing you to take more aggressive actions as the game goes on.

There are 3 mid-game scoring phases where power is calculated in each region. At the end of the game players will tally up points based on VP tokens earned in these scoring phases and the highest VP number revealed in each of the 6 tracks on your player board. The player with the most VP wins!

The Lazax Empire has burned to ash, rejected by its subjects. The aftermath was tragedy and petty conflict in equal measure, a time of loss and exhaustion. In the ensuing Dark Years, the factions of the galaxy retreated and recovered their strength. Now, they look upon the stars and see an opportunity—a chance to reclaim what was lost. A chance to redefine galactic civilization. A chance to leave their mark upon the stars.

This epic roll-and-write game for one to eight players offers an experience unlike anything FFG has done before. With a limited pool of resources at your disposal, you’ll need to carefully manage Navigation, Expansion, Industry, and Warfare as you amass victory points and earn your right to the throne on Mecatol Rex. Will your faction become the new rulers of the galaxy? Or will your fledgling empire fade into obscurity? Anything can happen in this strategic, infinitely-replayable game!

Write Your Legacy

Much like how Twilight Imperium is a massive board game, Twilight Inscription is a massive roll-and-write. Where most roll-and-writes have each player filling out a single board (referred to as a “player sheet”) as they play, Twilight Inscription has you filling out four!

During setup, each player starts off by choosing a faction, such as the Arborec , the Emirates of Hacan , the Nomad , or the Titans of Ul . All 24 of Twilight Imperium’s factions are here, and each has its own unique abilities. Once you have your faction, you take one of each of the aforementioned four player sheets: Navigation, Expansion, Industry, and Warfare. These are what you’ll be writing on as you play the game. These sheets are reusable, and you’ll write on them with dry-erase chalk markers, which are included with the box. And the coolest part? There are eight different versions of each sheet! This means you can start with a vastly different setup than your opponents. (Don’t worry—for those of you who prefer that everyone starts with the exact same setup, that option is also included.)

Here are a few of the different Expansion sheets. As you can see, each of them has a different collection of planets to explore.

Between all the factions you can play as and the different player sheets you can use, no two games of Twilight Inscription will feel quite the same. Now, let’s take a look at the things you’ll be doing during a game.

Each round kicks off with an event card. Most of these are “strategy events,” such as Fledgling Empire and Echoes of the Past . These grant you resources, which, along with the resources rolled on the dice, you then spend on one of your player sheets in a multitude of ways. You do this by using your marker to cross off the resource costs for whatever it is you’re trying to do (hence the “write” part of roll-and-write). Just keep in mind that you can only spend resources on one sheet per round!

There are a lot of things to spend resources on across all four sheets, and figuring out the best place to do so is part of the core strategy in Twilight Inscription. Maybe you want to discover new systems or race to Mecatol Rex on Navigation; perhaps you’d rather develop some planets on Expansion; you could always generate commodities to amass your wealth on Industry; or maybe you just want to build up your fleet on Warfare. You’ll gradually gain victory points no matter which sheet you invest in, but take care not to neglect any of them; otherwise, unexpected events could throw you off your game!

For example, some event cards, such as Border Conflict , will trigger a war, which involves you comparing the strength of your fleet (located on your Warfare sheet) to those of your neighbors. You earn victory points if your fleet is stronger than a neighbor’s, but you can also lose points if your fleet is weaker than theirs.

In a similar vein, if a council event occurs, such as Convene the Council , you’ll need votes, which you can build up on your Industry sheet. The effects of agendas like Technology Embargo and Corporate Tax Breaks can have serious effects on the game, but if you’ve been neglecting your Industry sheet, you won’t have enough votes to ensure the outcome is the one you want.

All in all, striking the balance between Navigation, Expansion, Industry, and Warfare is the key to achieving victory. There are endless possible strategies that you could use to pull ahead of your opponents—the question is, which approach is the best for you? The game goes until the war event A Throne for the Taking is resolved, at which point everybody’s victory points are tallied. Whoever has the most is the winner!

Alone Amongst the Stars

You may have caught it earlier when we mentioned the player count, but you can play this game solo as well!

If you play the game by yourself or with only one other player, than you will square off against an AI opponent. The AI opponent follows its own set of rules, and its objective is simple: make as much progress along its goal tracks as possible. The AI doesn’t earn any victory points for itself, but it does disrupt you (and your human opponent, if there is one) in your quest to earn points of your own. For example, the AI will actively oppose you in warfare and council events, so you will still want to make sure you build up your fleet and votes as much as you can. If you haven’t earned a certain number of victory points by the time the game ends, then the AI has beaten you, so bring your A-game!

A New Chapter

Twilight Inscription is an all-new way to experience the Twilight Imperium universe. This roll-and-write is FFG’s first foray into the genre, and the game is as epic and massive as anything in the TI universe should be. Make your mark on the galaxy and claim the throne when Twilight Inscription launches this fall!

This is your ticket to the track!

In Long Shot: The Dice Game, you and up to seven other players will strategize and push your luck as the action unfolds in a tense race of eight horses. During the game you buy horses, place bets, influence race movement, and utilize special abilities. The roll of the dice determines which horses move and the options available each turn, so be ready to adapt your plans. Once three horses cross the finish line, earnings are totaled. While there are many ways to earn money during a horse race, only the player that makes the most money will be declared the winner. Will you play it safe, or risk it big on a long shot?

SCOUT is a ladder-climbing game in which cards have two potential values, players may not rearrange their hand of cards, and players may pass their turn to take a card from the current high set of cards into their hand.

More specifically, cards are dual-indexed, with different values on each half of the card, with the 45 cards having all possible combinations of the numbers 1-10. During set-up, whoever is shuffling the cards should randomize both the order of the cards in the deck and their orientation. Once each player has been dealt their entire hand of cards, they pick up that hand without rearranging any of the cards; if they wish, they can rotate their entire hand of cards in order to use the values on the other end of each card, but again they cannot rearrange the order of cards in their hand.

On a turn, a player takes one of two actions:

  • Play: A player chooses one or more adjacent cards in their hand that have all the same value or that have values in consecutive order (whether ascending or descending), then they play this set of cards to the table. They can do this only if the table is empty (as on the first turn) or the set they're playing is ranked higher than the set currently on the table; a set is higher if it has more cards or has cards of the same value instead of consecutive cards or has a set of the same quantity and type but with higher values. In this latter case when a player overplays another set, the player captures the cards in this previous set and places them face down in front of themselves.
  • Scout: A player takes a card from either end of the set currently on the table and places it anywhere they wish in their hand in either orientation. Whoever played this previous set receives a 1 VP token as a reward for playing a set that wasn't beaten.

Three Sisters is a strategic roll-and-write game about backyard farming. Three Sisters is named after an indigenous agricultural technique still widely used today in which three different crops — in this case, pumpkins, corn, and beans — are planted close together. Corn provides a lattice for beans to climb, the beans bring nitrogen from the air into the soil, and the squash provides a natural mulch ground cover to reduce weeds and keep pests away.

In the game, you have your own player sheet with multiple areas: the garden, which is divided into six numbered zones, each containing the three crop types; the apiary; compost; perennials; goods; fruit; and the shed, which is filled with tools that have special abilities. All the crops, fruits, flowers, and hives are represented by tracks that you will mark off as you acquire these items. Many of the tracks are interconnected with other elements in the game, giving you bonuses along the way. A common feature of these tracks are circles that represent a harvest, which generates goods; get enough goods, and you unlock bonus actions. Advancing on all of these tracks offers various amounts of points, advancements, and bonuses.

The game lasts eight rounds. Each round, roll dice based on the number of players, group them by number, then place them on an action space of the circular action wheel, starting with the current position of the farmer; the farmer moves each round, which means that dice showing 1s, 2s, etc. will end up on different spaces each round. Once the dice have been placed, each player drafts one die and uses it as described below. Once everyone has drafted a die, all players get to use the lowest-valued die remaining on the action wheel. A die lets you do two things, which you can do in either order:

  • Plant or water the numbered zone matching the value of the die.
  • Take the action of the space from which you removed the die.

To plant, you mark the bottom space of two empty crop tracks. (Note that you can't plant beans until the corn adjacent to the beans is tall enough to support them.) To water, you mark one space in all the crop tracks that already have at least one mark in them. As for the actions on the action wheel, you can:

  • Plant or water again in the same numbered zone.
  • Gain one compost (which lets you adjust die values) and four goods (which will get you bonuses at the farmer's market).
  • Mark off the hive track, which can bring you points, goods, or bonus actions.
  • Mark one of the four fruit tracks. Each fruit is worth different points and different amounts of goods and has different track lengths and circle positions.
  • Visit the farmer's market, which gives you points and bonuses based on the number of goods you've collected.
  • Mark one of the fifteen tool tracks in your shed. As soon as you complete a track, you gain that power or end-game scoring opportunity.
  • Perennials don't have a direct action associated with them and are marked off only through actions in other areas, with the various perennials giving different bonuses as you mark them.

At the end of the round, all players receive a bonus action, either rain that waters all numbered zones in your garden, a trip to the shed, or a visit to the farmer's market. After eight rounds, you score points for harvested crops, perennials, the apiary, fruit, and some shed items. Whoever has the most points wins.

Three Sisters has a solo mode in which you try to top your own score against an "opponent" that drafts dice and blocks areas of your sheet.
